Repairs or improvements? Replaced a whole fence

Storm damage took out half the fence and we replaced all of it. Is that a repair I can claim this year, or a capital improvement?

Fixing the damaged part is usually a repair. Replacing the whole fence is usually capital works, claimed over time.

Could you split the invoice into the repair and the rest? Ask your accountant.

Insurance may cover the storm part too. Then only what you paid counts.

Insurance covered some. I'll take the split invoice to my accountant.

Keep photos of the damage before the repair. They help if anyone asks later.
